Welcome to The Unrevealed God

Can we determine God’s nature and purposes on our own without relying at all on any of the various Revelation stories on which our major religions are built? Numerous individuals have rejected all Revelation as the alleged words of God, but instead of doing that here, let’s just assume for the sake of argument that those stories are human rather than divine creations and see where that takes us. For some, it may take you right back to the God of Revelation, but for others, it may lead to a God that is surprisingly different in many ways. In any event, the journey itself should be interesting and enjoyable.

If not Revelation, what kind of tools do we have to work with? Quite a few, actually, including human history, science, philosophy, logic, reason, and our own personal experience in this world.

But before getting down to work, we have to make two basic assumptions in order to just start our quest. (For the sake of simplicity only, I may sometimes refer to God as “He.”) First, we must assume that God is relevant to us, which is more complicated than it might seem. For example, God would be irrelevant to us if He is not connected or involved with us in some meaningful way. By the same token, He would be equally irrelevant if He is totally inscrutable to us because, in that case, we could never possibly relate to Him. And second, if God is “higher” or supernatural, His existence is therefore not dependent on the existence of our material, finite Universe, so we can assume He existed before the Universe did.

My plan is to post one metaphysical question every 45 days or so, beginning in or before January of 2021, and then allow 15 days to post your own answers or comments. At that point, I will post my own answer to the question and eagerly await your thoughts about it. Along the way, I’ll do my best to respond to all of your ideas. There is, of course, no right or wrong answer to any question, so please don’t hesitate to post your views, no matter how unorthodox they may be. I’m hopeful this exchange of ideas will be stimulating for all of us.
